Whitening is the most-requested cosmetic treatment we do at Apex Digital Dental, and also the one surrounded by the most misinformation. Let us separate what genuinely brightens teeth from what just sounds good on social media.
How whitening actually works
Effective whitening relies on one of two active ingredients: hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide. These break down stain molecules inside the tooth. Anything that does not contain a peroxide is, at best, polishing surface stains — not truly whitening.
What works
- In-office professional whitening: the fastest, most dramatic option — several shades in about an hour under supervision, with gum protection.
- Custom take-home trays: nearly the same results over one to two weeks, on your schedule, using professional-strength gel.
- Whitening strips from the pharmacy: modest, real results for mild staining — just slower and less even than custom trays.
What is mostly myth
- Charcoal toothpaste: abrasive enough to scratch enamel over time, with no peroxide to actually whiten. We do not recommend it.
- Banana peels, lemon juice, baking-soda scrubs: acids and abrasives that can erode enamel and, ironically, make teeth look more yellow as the darker dentin shows through.
- Whitening from “one weird trick” gadgets: if it does not contain peroxide, it is not whitening your teeth.
About sensitivity
Temporary sensitivity is the most common side effect, and it is just that — temporary, usually fading within a day or two. Professional treatment lets us use desensitizing agents and the right concentration for your teeth, which is exactly why supervised whitening is more comfortable than guessing with an over-the-counter kit.
Whitening will not change crowns, veneers or fillings — they keep their original shade. That is one reason a quick exam first matters.
Start with a conversation
Before you whiten, it is worth a five-minute check to rule out cavities or gum issues (whitening agents can sting exposed roots) and to set realistic expectations for your starting shade. Book a consult at Apex Digital Dental and we will tell you honestly what is achievable for your smile.
